Building My Own AI Sprint App: Why I Made SpeedTrackr

πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ From Sprinter to Developer

For years, I’ve been chasing faster times on the track β€” and learning the hard way that there aren’t many affordable tools to help sprinters like me time practice runs or keep a simple athlete roster without buying laser gates or a lab.

So I decided to build one. On Android. On the phones athletes already carry.

πŸŽ₯ Watch: Why I Built SpeedTrackr

In this video, I explain the why behind SpeedTrackr β€” and how it blends my passion for sprinting with AI and coding.

πŸ’‘ What Is SpeedTrackr?

SpeedTrackr is an Android sports-performance app for athletes and coaches. It is not a web app, not an iOS app, and not a remote-coaching SaaS. Same app, on the track:

  • 🎯 Dual-phone wireless timing gates β€” pair two Androids with a 4-digit code for practice start/finish timing over a set distance
  • ⬆️ Jump / RSI from flight-time video
  • ⚑ Reaction starts off a start cue
  • πŸ‹οΈ Video-based VBT (on-device bar velocity)
  • πŸ“‹ Coach roster + Excel export β€” inside the Android app only

Free to start. Get it on Google Play.

Built by a sprinter, for sprinters β€” no laser hardware and no six-figure sports-tech budget required.

What it is β€” and what it isn’t

It is: a pocket performance lab for practice. Dual-phone timing is more consistent than a hand stopwatch for training. Stated consistency is Β±0.022s versus hand timing β€” practice-grade, not competition FAT.

It is not: official photo-finish or certified laser gates. Not a web coach dashboard. Not a periodization planner, wellness OS, or API-licensing platform. Coach support today is roster management and Excel export in the Android app β€” that’s it.

If you want the honest product snapshot, start at speedtrackr.com or the free-tools hub.

πŸ” The Problem I Wanted to Solve

  • No cheap way to time practice runs without a partner holding a watch or buying gates
  • Training notes scattered across WhatsApp, spreadsheets, and memory
  • β€œCoach platforms” that promised remote SaaS and never helped on the track

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ’» How I Built It

The product athletes use is the Android app. This website is the marketing and education layer (Next.js). Early experiments lived on the web; the timing protocol, jump, reaction, and VBT all shipped where training actually happens β€” on two phones at the track.

I still write about the stack because the story matters: computer vision, a pairing code between devices, and a refusal to pretend a browser tab can replace a start/finish gate.

🌍 Who This Is For

  • πŸƒ Solo sprinters who need start/finish times and form feedback without a timing crew
  • πŸ“ˆ Coaches who want in-session Android tools plus a simple roster and Excel export
  • πŸ’‘ Athletes who want practice-grade numbers, not a certified meet system

πŸ“ˆ What’s Next?

I’m focused on making the Android app better at the job it already has: tighter timing, clearer form cues, and coach roster / Excel that stay honest β€” not a web dashboard, not smart periodization-as-a-product, not API licensing.

If something new ships, it will be in the Play Store listing and on this site. I will not preview features that don’t exist.
